Neighborhood Partnership Network
The Faubourg St. Roch Improvement Association is partnering with Rebuilding Together New Orleans and several local and national organizations to offer Homeownership Education and Counseling Classes to interested buyers in the St. Roch neighborhood. Trainings will offer an overview of the home purchasing process to prospective first-time homebuyers so that they may gain financial independence and build equity.
These classes train and empower residents to improve their lives through homeownership and are provided by the Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Greater New Orleans, and made possible through funding from NeighborWorks America. The First Pilgrim Baptist Church generously provided space for the classes free of charge.
There are currently over 500 blighted or abandoned properties in St. Roch that will be available at affordable prices to first-time homebuyers. Students who complete the 12-Hour Homebuyer Class may be eligible for $50,000-$65,000 of Soft Second Mortgage Funds.
The next session will be held Tuesdays & Thursdays, January 13, 15, 20 and 22, 2009 from 5:30 – 8:30 PM at the First Pilgrim Baptist Church, located at 1234 Arts Street. Courses will also be held throughout the spring. For registration information, please call 504-948-0808.

Americans at the Pulpit and in the Public Square: a conversation on race, religion and rhetoric in a diverse America held at Xavier University, an outstanding art college. It is organized by the American Jewish Committee and the New York Archdiocese’s Office of Black Ministry, during Martin Luther King Jr. weekend (January 17-19, 2009), with leaders and activists from diverse ethnic and religious communities nationwide.
The conference will explore the relations between Catholics, Jews and African Americans in the United States, its past, present and future. It will study how religious and political beliefs can unite or divide, and look at the United States’ history of racism, intolerance and anti-Semitism, as well as its proud tradition of giving opportunity to so many, regardless of origin. It will also focus on the future through education and political empowerment, and wonder how to recreate a strong sense of a greater common good.
Moreover, the conference will offer the opportunity to take part in a grassroots community service project to rebuild New Orleans.
