SPEAKERS BUREAU INFORMATION
WHAT: The Speakers Bureau offers local and regional experts an opportunity to share their knowledge with New Orleans residents. These electives are intended to supplement the Core Class material by providing information on specific issues relevant to civic engagement.
WHY: The Speakers Bureau is an opportunity to encourage reciprocal exchange of community organizing knowledge. If you are interested in working NPN to refine this model, email .
SIGN-UP: First come first serve electives that are targeted primarily to current and past participants of the Capacity College. Class sizes are capped at 15 participants. Fill out RSVP Form at Link per Speaker Bureau.
COST
For 2010 Capacity College Participants – Free, but limited to 5 current participants per class.
For 2009 Capacity College Participants – $10 per Speaker Bureau elective. Applies only to 2009 Capacity College participants and groups (e.g. all members of Carrollton Riverbend Neighborhood Association).
Non-Capacity College Participants – $15 per Speaker Bureau elective. As space permits.

Nexus Neighborhoods
February 5th 9:00am – 10:00am – Meet in Front of St. Louis Cathedral*
Description: For more than 200 years the French Quarter has been a nexus of community life, and one of New Orleans most hearty neighborhoods. Join Steven Bingler from Concordia planning and design, who was a resident of the French Quarter for more than 30 years, for a 60 minute tour and discussion about how it works and why it has survived for so many years.

Leading Neighborhood Food Projects
March 3rd, 2010 for 5:30pm at 4840 Banks Street, NOFFN Offices
Description: Learn from New Orleans Food and Farm Network’s Alicia Vance on how a community food project can be developed in your neighborhood. Projects include gardens, cooking, selling; anything to do with production and consumption of food. A healthy, active project to involve the youth of your community.

Good Neighbor Agreements – Collaborating with Developers
March 16th, 6:00pm. 4152 Canal St at Volunteers of America Offices
Description: Do you have a real estate development occurring in your neighborhood? Wish you knew how to make sure what the developer promises actually occurs? Perhaps a Good Neighbor Agreement or a Community Benefits Agreement is the way to go. Amber Seely, of Renaissance Development Corporation, will describe the successful experience of creating a Good Neighbor Agreement in the Sugar Hill neighborhood of Gentilly. The session will cover topics like how to engage the developer, what types of things can be contained in an agreement and suggestions about structuring the process.

Basics of Planning and Zoning – Led by City Planning Commission

Description: Learn the language of planning and zoning. Every building and property in is effected by planning and zoning in someway. Join the CPC staff to make sure you understand the role of the individual, property and civic association have in planning and zoning.

Task Force for Emergency Preparedness – Prepare Your Community!

No one knows your neighborhood better than you. American Red Cross will provide instruction on how to create a basic committee to prepare your neighborhood for emergency and disaster events. Let’s all take responsibility for our safety.

Creating a Wellness Committee
Wednesday, April 7th for 5:30pm at NPN Offices, 4902 Canal Street
This elective assists the participant in steps to create a wellness committee, accessing community resources for neighbors and planning wellness events. Learn how to ask the right questions from health services. An overview of resources is provided and dialogue on utilizing public and private institutions to assist with community health fairs, workshops and education of neighborhood.
